We are pleased to announce that our new Club President is Michael Cant. Canty has taken over the reins from Geoff Hickman.
Moving from Cootamundra to Sydney at the age of 18 to study at Macquarie University, Michael had one season at Northern District before coming to Gordon. His first grade debut came at the age of 19 in the 1987-88 season. Michael established himself as one of the leading opening batsmen in the competition over the next 10 years, scoring 5285 runs at the excellent average of 34.09, with 13 centuries.
After the 1989-90 Premiership win, Michael assumed the captaincy of the first grade team the following year at the age of 23. This team also won the premiership – a wonderful achievement. While it was a very strong side, with the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Phil Emery, Mark O’Neill, Richard Stobo, Kevin Roberts and Jon Davidson, Michael continued to score heavily. In his first eight seasons in first grade, Canty scored over 500 runs in six of them. In all, Michael had ten first grade seasons and he sits at 9th in the first grade all time run scorers for the Stags. Michael was selected in the NSW 2nd XI several times and many would argue that he had the ability to represent NSW at first class level.
Michael came back a couple of years later to play some lower grade cricket, where he continued to set a high standard. He also had a couple of games in the Colts only 3-4 seasons ago with more success!
After a period of time having a family and establishing himself in the field of financial services, Michael returned to Gordon in 2014 where he became a very active member of the Executive Committee. Last season he chaired the Cricket Committee and as the new president, the club has an extremely capable, experienced leader. We wish him all the best for the coming years.
